Temporary Residence and Employment in the Republic of Serbia

Submitting an application for temporary residence approval in the Republic of Serbia is one of the most important steps for most foreign nationals.

The legal grounds for submitting an application for temporary residence approval include the following categories:

  • Employment
  • Education or learning the Serbian language
  • Studying
  • Participation in student exchange programs
  • Professional specialization, training, and internships
  • Scientific research work or other scientific and educational activities
  • Family reunification (marriage/common-law partnership/kinship)
  • Religious service
  • Medical treatment or care
  • Ownership of real estate
  • Humanitarian residence
  • Status of a human trafficking victim
  • Status of a presumed human trafficking victim
  • Other justified reasons in accordance with the law or international agreements

In exceptional cases, the Government of the Republic of Serbia, through an act, defines the criteria, method, and specific conditions for approving temporary residence for special categories of foreigners, such as: foreign investors in the Republic of Serbia, foreign talents, foreigners involved in innovation activities, foreigners of Serbian descent, foreign digital nomads, highly qualified foreigners, etc.

For cases listed under points 1) and 5), a unified permit is issued, while in other cases, a temporary residence permit is issued.
